Rapid City officials will hold a public meeting later today to update residents on the status of the Chapel Lane Bridge replacement project.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Postcards inviting Chapel Valley residents to attend have already been sent.
City leaders say the update follows Rapid City’s unsuccessful application for funding through the 2026 South Dakota Bridge Improvement Grant Program, which could have helped move the long-planned replacement project forward.
The Chapel Lane Bridge, located near the intersection of Chapel Lane and South Dakota Highway 44, has been operating under weight restrictions since August 2025. Those limits were put in place after emergency repairs were needed when a hole was discovered in the bridge deck last spring.
During Today’s meeting, city officials plan to provide an overview of the project’s current status, outline potential next steps, and gather feedback from the public.
Built in 1974 after the previous bridge was destroyed during the 1972 Black Hills Flood, the Chapel Lane Bridge remains the sole access route for hundreds of residents and businesses in the Chapel Valley area.
