While gas prices across South Dakota have jumped sharply in recent weeks, they remain well below the national average.
The statewide average price for regular unleaded gas is currently $3.69 per gallon, up from roughly $3.10 a month ago. Nationally, the average is $4.18 per gallon.
AAA attributes the surge to higher crude oil prices, growing seasonal demand and the annual switch to summer‑blend gasoline, which is more expensive to produce. Analysts say those factors have pushed prices higher nationwide, though Midwest states like South Dakota remain among the more affordable.
Metro prices vary slightly, with Rapid City and Sioux Falls averaging in the mid‑$3.50 to low‑$3.60 range, while some rural areas are seeing slightly lower costs.
