Governor Larry Rhoden announced a new gunsmithing curriculum at Western Dakota Technical College, in hopes of expanding workforce training for South Dakota’s defense and firearms industries.
The state is awarding $4 million from the Future Fund to support equipment purchases and the acquisition of an accredited gunsmithing school in Colorado. The investment will expand hands-on training and help meet workforce demands. Graduates of the current program work in law enforcement, military agencies, and firearms manufacturing.
Western Dakota Technical College President Kendra Ericson said the program will prepare students for high-demand careers while supporting industry growth statewide.
The announcement included representatives from firearms companies headquartered in South Dakota, as well as leaders from Western Dakota Technical College, local government, and regional education and economic development organizations.
The initiative is a component of last week’s announcement of a new South Dakota Defense Institute in Rapid City. Western Dakota Technical College is expected to welcome its first gunsmithing students in fall 2027.
