Rapid City officials are taking a more aggressive approach to reducing graffiti this spring and are asking the public to help report it.
City leaders say graffiti has become a common sight on park restrooms, businesses, utility boxes, vacant buildings, and other public and private property. The markings often include obscene language or gang-related symbols and detract from the community’s appearance.
Residents are encouraged to report graffiti along with its location using the city’s “Report A Problem” feature on the Public Works webpage. The city’s goal is to remove reported graffiti within 24 hours. Officials say an updated city website will soon allow for more detailed reporting.
Mayor Jason Salamun said graffiti harms the character of the city and negatively impacts residents. Removal efforts will involve Rapid City Public Works, the Parks Department, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office IGNITE team, and Code Enforcement, depending on the location. Utilities will be notified to remove graffiti on their infrastructure within 10 days.
Graffiti is defined as any unauthorized marking, painting, or inscription on property.
