Cleanup efforts continue at Custer State Park following a December windstorm and March’s Qury Fire. Park officials say the December storm brought wind gusts over 100 mph, causing widespread damage and prompting more than 10,000 hours of cleanup work. Crews removed thousands of tons of debris, though timber recovery has been limited by access issues and a shortage of loggers.
The park has spent about $186,000 on storm recovery, with additional costs submitted to FEMA. Most damaged resort facilities have been repaired.
The Qury Fire burned about 1,200 acres within the park but destroyed no structures, aided by prior thinning and favorable terrain. Despite staff fatigue, park trails are open and resort facilities remain on track to open May 1.
