The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is asking for the public’s help after parts of a dead mountain goat were removed in Spearfish Canyon.
The animal was found April 8 at the base of Bridal Veil Falls. While officials say the goat likely died from a fall or vehicle strike, investigators are concerned that the head and much of the neck were taken before wildlife staff arrived.
Under state law, it is illegal to possess or remove any part of a big game animal, including mountain goats. Violations are classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Mountain goats are known for navigating steep canyon cliffs, though falls do occur. The animals are not native to the Black Hills; the Spearfish Canyon herd traces back to a single female that relocated to the area in 2013.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Turn In Poachers hotline at 1‑888‑OVERBAG or a local wildlife conservation officer. Tips may be anonymous, and rewards are available for information leading to a conviction.
