Law enforcement has released the identities of those involved in a fatal crash in Sturgis earlier this week.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater said the driver of the stolen pickup truck involved in Tuesday’s crash was 50‑year‑old Don Crisafulli of Sturgis. Crisafulli was life‑flighted to a Rapid City hospital in critical condition, but Vandewater said Thursday that his condition has improved. Charges are pending.
The driver of the car that was struck was identified as 26‑year‑old Egon Lake of Whitewood. Lake died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police say Crisafulli was allegedly fleeing from officers in the stolen pickup at a high rate of speed when he collided with Lake’s vehicle on Lazelle Street. Both drivers had to be extricated from their vehicles.
The crash closed Lazelle Street for several hours as investigators worked the scene. Sturgis Police and the South Dakota Highway Patrol continue to investigate.
