A Red Flag Warning is in effect from late this morning through early this evening across northeastern Wyoming and much of western South Dakota due to critical fire weather conditions.
High temperatures in the 80s to mid‑90s, humidity as low as 9 percent, and strong southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph will create an extreme wildfire risk. Isolated thunderstorms this afternoon and evening could bring little rain but produce lightning and erratic winds over 50 mph, increasing the chance of fire starts.
The warning includes the Black Hills, Pine Ridge, Badlands, and parts of southwest South Dakota and northeast Wyoming. Conditions are expected to improve tonight as cooler air and higher humidity move in. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, as any fire could spread rapidly.
