The South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium has released results from its 2026 statewide Point‑in‑Time Homeless Count and Housing Inventory Count, showing a decline in homelessness compared to the previous two years.
The count, which helps measure homelessness at the local, state, and national levels, identified 1,154 people experiencing homelessness statewide. Results are compiled with help from regional partners, though officials note rural areas may be undercounted due to limited service providers.
The data show 675 men and boys and 479 women and girls were counted. About 22 percent were unsheltered, down from 25 percent last year. Individuals ages 18 to 24 made up 8.6 percent of the total, continuing a downward trend from recent years.
The report also found 26 veterans experiencing homelessness, the lowest number recorded since 2009.
