Fireworks are still planned for the Freedom 250 event on July 3, but organizers say dry conditions in the Black Hills could prompt changes.
Travel South Dakota Secretary Wanda Goodman said officials are closely monitoring drought conditions and wildfire risk while working with their fireworks vendor on contingency plans. If conditions prevent fireworks, organizers could pivot to an advanced lighting show, similar to alternatives used at past events.
About 4,800 people, selected through a lottery, will attend the event in person. The celebration will also be broadcast nationwide on July 4, showcasing South Dakota, Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills, according to Tourism Advisory Board President Caleb Arceneaux.
The Mount Rushmore memorial grounds will be closed to the public on July 3 and open at 1 p.m. for ticketed guests only. Gov. Larry Rhoden has formally invited President Donald Trump to attend the event.
