Residents evacuated from their homes due to the Murphy Fire near Hermosa were allowed to return before noon Thursday as firefighters made progress containing the rapidly growing wildfire.
Forward progress was stopped at 423 acres as crews worked overnight on mop up and patrol.
Homes in the immediate area were evacuated around 3 a.m. as a precaution due to the fire’s proximity. Evacuation orders were lifted before noon, with officials saying approximately 10 residents were affected.
Officials confirmed no structures were lost, and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the Murphy Fire remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, a pair of prairie fires are burning in Jackson County in South Central South Dakota. The Red Stone Complex has burned 100 acres Northeast of Wanblee while the Bauman Fire has claimed 1000 acres at last report.
