Law enforcement agencies searched parts of Meade County Thursday for a wanted parolee suspected of burglary and armed robbery, before calling off the ground search later that night.
The search began after authorities issued an emergency alert around 7:30 p.m. for residents in the area of Meadow Retreat Road and Erickson Ranch Road, warning that Deja Guthmiller, 22, of Rapid City, was believed to be in the area. Officials said Guthmiller was wanted in connection with burglaries and an armed robbery in the Rapid City and Box Elder areas and was considered armed and dangerous.
By 10:30 p.m., officials announced that resources searching on foot had been recalled and the ground search was terminated. The Meade County Sheriff’s Office said deputies would continue increased patrols in the area overnight.
Multiple agencies assisted in the operation, including the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, U.S. Marshals Service, and South Dakota Parole Services. Authorities expanded the search area to include surrounding neighborhoods and deployed Highway Patrol drones to aid the effort.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, lock homes and outbuildings, and call 911 if they saw anyone on foot or noticed suspicious activity or have information on Guthmiller’s whereabouts.
