A Rapid City man has been sentenced to the maximum 25 years in prison for a violent home invasion that occurred just hours after his release from prison.
Forty-one-year-old Joshua Peacock received a 25-year sentence in the South Dakota State Penitentiary for a first-degree burglary committed in February 2025. Prosecutors said Peacock broke into a home, threatened to rape and kill a woman and her 3-year-old daughter, and made additional threats against other family members in the residence.
According to court records, the victim awoke to find Peacock inside her home holding her child and threatening violence if she screamed. When Peacock demanded she remove her clothing, she instead fought back and called for help, prompting him to strike her before fleeing. Authorities later confirmed Peacock acted alone.
Peacock was arrested after law enforcement used a stolen phone from the residence to identify and locate him. During sentencing, the victim described the lasting trauma caused by the attack. Judge Jeffrey Connolly cited the severity of the crime and Peacock’s criminal history, including a 2013 conviction for kidnapping and burglary, in imposing the sentence.
Because the sentence is subject to South Dakota’s truth-in-sentencing laws, Peacock will not be eligible for parole. The case was prosecuted by State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel.
