Pennington County Sheriff Brian Mueller and Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick issued a joint statement expressing support for the Sioux Falls Police Department after an officer was seriously injured in a recent shooting but is now in stable condition.
The leaders said the incident highlights the dangers faced daily by law enforcement and expressed gratitude for strong community and statewide support of officers.
Mueller and Hedrick also pointed to the shooting as evidence of the need to more aggressively address violent re-offending parolees. They noted that while progress has been made, immediate state-level changes are needed to better protect communities. The two agencies plan to release statistics later this week highlighting early work by their newly formed Parolee Accountability Task Force.
