A coalition called South Dakotans for Fair Taxes is launching a petition drive to put Senate Bill 245 on the November ballot, arguing the measure unfairly shifts taxes onto working families and renters.
The bill would divert an estimated $110 million from a planned sales tax increase in 2027 into homeowner property tax relief. Coalition members say the benefit largely goes to higher-value homes while renters — more than 30% of South Dakotans — would pay higher sales taxes without receiving relief.
The group also argues modest homeowners may see little net benefit, while renters, workers and family farmers would face higher costs. Supporters cite recent polling showing more voters oppose trading higher sales taxes for property tax relief than support it.
South Dakotans for Fair Taxes says voters should decide the issue at the ballot box this fall.
