The Luke Birch trial continued this week as a Pennington County jury watched video of police interviews showing Luke Birch’s account of his best friend, McGarland “Mack” Walker VI, shift as questioning progressed.
Birch, 23, of Rapid City, is charged with first‑degree murder or, alternatively, second‑degree murder in Walker’s March 8, 2024, shooting death inside the Candlewood Place apartment building. In early interviews, Birch described Walker as a supportive, nonconfrontational friend. Later, he portrayed Walker as aggressive and threatening on the day of the shooting, eventually telling police, “I shot and killed my best friend.”
Investigators testified Birch was initially interviewed as a witness but became a suspect after officers recovered text messages exchanged just before the shooting that contradicted Birch’s claims. After repeated denials and a request for an attorney, Birch later asked to speak with police again, admitting he had lied and claiming he fired after Walker appeared to reach for a gun.
Jurors also heard forensic testimony detailing Walker’s multiple gunshot wounds. The trial is scheduled to continue this morning.
