South Dakota is trending ahead of its revenue projections as the fiscal year nears its end, according to the Legislature’s chief budget analyst.
Jeff Mehlhaff of the Legislative Research Council told the Joint Appropriations Committee on Thursday that the state is about $10 million ahead of its year‑to‑date target as of March. The fiscal year ends June 30, with April figures expected next week.
Sales tax collections, the state’s largest revenue source, are about $6 million above projections. Lottery revenue is within $43,000 of the year‑end estimate, while contractor’s excise tax collections are up 2.1% year‑to‑date, just below the projected 2.4% increase.
Mehlhaff said smaller revenue sources are also tracking close to targets. Final totals and revenue projections for fiscal year 2027 will be reviewed at the committee’s July 20 meeting.
