A nationwide $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, officially took effect Friday, May 1, according to South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley.
As part of the agreement, South Dakota is expected to receive an estimated $10.1 million over the next 15 years. The funds will be directed to addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery efforts through the National Opioid Settlement Fund administered by the South Dakota Department of Social Services.
The settlement bans the Sackler family from selling opioids in the United States and is shared among South Dakota and 54 other states and territories. Including this agreement, South Dakota has now secured nearly $100 million from opioid-related settlements aimed at addressing the impacts of the opioid epidemic.
