Volunteer fire departments across South Dakota will receive help upgrading safety gear under new legislation signed by Gov. Larry Rhoden that allocates $5 million for firefighter personal protective equipment.
The funding, approved during the 2026 legislative session, will be distributed through a grant program run by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Departments with at least 70% volunteer membership are eligible to apply for funds to purchase items such as helmets, turnout gear, gloves, boots, and breathing apparatuses.
State officials say the program addresses long‑standing financial challenges faced by volunteer departments, many of which have delayed replacing outdated equipment. Gov. Rhoden, a longtime volunteer firefighter, said the investment is critical to keeping firefighters safe and prepared.
Applications will be sent to eligible departments by mail and email, with submissions accepted through Aug. 1, 2026.
