Rapid City’s annual Cleanup Week resulted in a record amount of waste collected, with more than 970 tons of trash delivered to the city landfill during the April 20–25 event.
The total exceeded collections from recent years, topping nearly 850 tons in 2025 and 895 tons in 2024. More than 1,000 volunteers took part, including residents of all ages, business and service groups, city staff, and elected leaders.
Cleanup efforts focused on fence lines, ditches, roadsides, creek beds, and other problem areas across the city. Residents also used the week to clear out garages, attics, and basements, bringing unwanted items to the landfill.
City data show 2,694 vehicles dropped off waste during Cleanup Week, an increase from 2025. Overall landfill traffic totaled 3,971 vehicles when residential, yard waste, and commercial loads were included.
Eighty volunteer teams participated, with many covering multiple locations, contributing nearly five tons of collected litter. City officials noted that cleanup efforts are encouraged year‑round and not limited to the annual event.
