No citizen-led ballot measures were submitted by South Dakota’s May deadline, the first time that has happened in 50 years, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
However, Dakotans for Health says a recent court ruling striking down a February submission deadline as unconstitutional may still allow petitions to be filed. The case is now before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Despite the state reverting to a previous deadline that has passed, co‑founder Rick Weiland says the group continues collecting signatures and plans to submit them once enough are gathered.
The organization is backing two 2026 measures aimed at limiting legislative changes to voter‑approved initiatives and requiring voter approval for changes to the initiative process itself.
