Fall River County officials have reinforced fire restrictions as dry and windy conditions continue to increase wildfire risk across the area.
A burn ban issued May 7 remains in effect for most of the county, prohibiting open burning and fireworks, with limited exceptions for propane or charcoal grills used for cooking. The ban is triggered when fire danger reaches high or above.
In the Black Hills Fire Protection District — north of the Cheyenne River and west of Highway 79 — open burning is not allowed outside of commercial campgrounds. Additional rules apply in municipalities: Hot Springs permits only contained fires in approved fire pits, and during Red Flag Warnings only propane devices are allowed. Edgemont also enforces a fire ban during elevated fire danger.
Officials warned that failing to control or report a dangerous fire can result in criminal charges and liability for suppression costs. Residents and visitors are urged to monitor conditions closely and follow all fire restrictions to reduce wildfire risk.
