A Red Flag Warning remains in effect from noon Wednesday through 9 p.m. Thursday across much of western South Dakota as hot, dry, and windy conditions raise the risk of rapid wildfire spread.
The warning includes Fall River County, the Black Hills foothills, Custer County plains, Pine Ridge, and areas across western and central South Dakota, including the Badlands, Ziebach, Haakon, and Bennett counties.
Forecasters say southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, are expected Wednesday, with relative humidity dropping as low as 10 percent. Conditions will remain critical Thursday as winds shift northwest and humidity levels fall again into the teens.
Fire officials warn that any fires that develop during this period could spread quickly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures is creating extreme fire danger across the region.
