South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is urging residents to prioritize hearing health during National Speech-Language-Hearing Month while also warning about misleading claims from some hearing aid companies.
Jackley encouraged individuals—especially older adults, law enforcement and military members—to schedule hearing tests and take steps to protect their hearing, calling it both a health and safety issue.
He also cautioned consumers about over-the-counter hearing aid sales, saying some companies use deceptive marketing tactics. The Consumer Protection Division recommends researching companies, questioning online reviews and endorsements, and carefully reviewing refund policies.
Officials advise consulting with medical professionals or trusted family members before making purchasing decisions and warn that deals that seem too good to be true often are.
Consumers who believe they have been targeted by a scam are encouraged to contact the state’s Consumer Protection Division.
