Firefighters contained a structure fire that escalated to two alarms in the Hayward area of rural Pennington County Friday afternoon.
The Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a call around 3:15pm in the 13000 block of Lost Cave Road, where crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-story home. Fire had spread into the ceiling and roof and extended to nearby trees, vegetation and agricultural shelters.
Firefighters quickly mounted an aggressive attack, bringing the blaze under control and limiting the wildland fire to about one-tenth of an acre. Officials said the response prevented further damage to surrounding property and infrastructure.
Three people were inside the home at the time. One occupant was treated at the scene and released. One firefighter suffered minor injuries.
The American Red Cross, along with family members and neighbors, is assisting the displaced residents. No domestic animals were reported injured.
