Authorities have identified the woman who died in a two-vehicle crash last week west of Rapid City.
Lyla Dee Henrichsen, 76, of Rapid City died from injuries sustained in the crash Thursday, May 14, on U.S. Highway 16, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Henrichsen was a passenger in a 1996 Toyota Corolla driven by Leah Renee Thornton, 56, also of Rapid City.
Preliminary information indicates Thornton entered the highway from Busted Five Court when her vehicle was struck by a westbound 2019 GMC Sierra driven by a 58-year-old man from Newcastle, Wyoming. The collision sent the Corolla onto the north shoulder, where Henrichsen was ejected.
Henrichsen and Thornton, who were not wearing seat belts, were taken to Monument Health with life-threatening injuries. Henrichsen later died. Thornton remained seriously injured. The driver of the GMC, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained minor injuries.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. All information released so far is preliminary.
