South Dakota Wildland Fire officials gathered with new seasonal firefighters for their annual preseason briefing, highlighting preparations for what could be a demanding fire season and emphasizing continued state support for fire response efforts.
Gov. Larry Rhoden attended the event, praising firefighters for their work protecting communities, natural resources and infrastructure across the state.
State leaders pointed to recent investments aimed at improving wildfire readiness, including the opening of new wildland fire facilities in Hot Springs and Rapid City. Officials said the upgrades will enhance response times and operational capability.
Additional funding has been secured to replace aging chainsaws and provide $5 million in grants for personal protective equipment for volunteer fire departments. The state also created a new East River fire management officer position to expand coordination in eastern South Dakota.
Lawmakers this year approved several measures supporting fire services, including funding for wildfire suppression, controlled burns to reduce fuel loads, and increased allowances for firefighter meal costs.
Officials said the combined investments and policy changes reflect a broader effort to strengthen firefighting capabilities statewide ahead of heightened wildfire risks.
