City crews have begun adding new markings to downtown parking spaces in an effort to reduce vehicles extending into traffic lanes.
The updated striping, now visible along Main and Saint Joseph streets between East and West boulevards, marks where parked vehicles should stop to avoid obstructing traffic. Vehicles that extend past the line may face citations or towing, officials said.
The effort comes as the city continues to receive complaints about large vehicles, such as pickups, protruding into travel lanes, particularly during the busy spring and summer months.
Parking Operations Manager Anna Gilligan said the additional markings are intended to help drivers better gauge space and improve safety. The city issues dozens of citations each year for vehicles blocking traffic.
Officials also reminded drivers to park within painted lines, face the direction of travel and stay within 12 inches of the curb, as required by city code.
Drivers of larger vehicles are encouraged to use nearby side streets, which can better accommodate longer vehicles without impeding traffic.
