Rapid City Parks crews are set to begin planting thousands of flowers across city parks and frontage areas this week, signaling the start of the summer season.
After weeks of cooler temperatures and lingering frost concerns, greenhouse specialist John Berglund said conditions have now reached a “safe zone” for planting.
Crews will add color to locations including Halley Park, Wilson Park, Sioux Park’s formal gardens, the Sunken Gardens near Canyon Lake Drive and Otto’s Corner at Omaha Street and West Boulevard.
This year’s plantings will highlight colors tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday celebration. Berglund said the city’s oversized banana plants will also return for their 10th year.
Parks staff will keep extra flowers on hand throughout the season to replace any plants damaged by hail, a common summer concern.
