South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley on Thursday announced the appointment of Chad Mosteller as director of the state Division of Criminal Investigation, replacing Dan Satterlee, who has been named U.S. marshal for South Dakota.
Mosteller, a longtime member of the agency, first worked at DCI as a college intern in the late 1990s and joined full time in August 2002. Over the course of his career, he has served as a special agent, supervisory special agent, administrator of law enforcement training and assistant director for administrative operations. Since January 2023, he has been DCI assistant director of field operations following Jackley’s return to the attorney general’s office.
In 2022, then-Attorney General Mark Vargo appointed Mosteller as interim DCI director. He served in that role until Jackley appointed Satterlee as director in 2023.
Satterlee recently was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and formally appointed by President Donald Trump to serve as South Dakota’s U.S. marshal. His swearing-in date has not yet been announced.
Mosteller is scheduled to be sworn in as director at 11:30 a.m. CDT on Friday, June 5, in the South Dakota Supreme Court courtroom at the State Capitol in Pierre. Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen will administer the oath.
