A Pine Ridge man has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges stemming from a February crash in Rapid City that left one woman dead and four others injured.
Torry Ghost Bear, 31, entered his plea Monday during an arraignment before Circuit Court Judge Joshua Hendrickson at the Pennington County Courthouse.
Ghost Bear is charged with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree eluding, and false personation. Prosecutors have also filed a habitual offender notice, citing prior convictions in 2020, 2023, and 2024.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the charges stem from a Feb. 5 incident in which Ghost Bear allegedly fled a traffic stop for a missing license plate, leading officers on a pursuit. Authorities say he ran a stop sign at North Cherry Avenue and East North Street, where his vehicle was struck by a pickup.
Four passengers in Ghost Bear’s vehicle were seriously injured. One of them, 22-year-old Mia Lane Carpio, died from her injuries on Feb. 12. The driver of the other vehicle was also hurt.
Ghost Bear faces a potential life sentence if convicted on the manslaughter charge. His next hearing is scheduled for June 22.
