As summer storms sweep across South Dakota, Attorney General Marty Jackley is urging residents to stay alert for scammers posing as contractors offering quick repair services. Jackley warned that fraudulent vendors often target storm-damaged communities, promising fast and inexpensive repairs but delivering substandard work—or none at all.
The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division advises homeowners to protect themselves by getting written estimates that include business contact information, verifying a contractor’s South Dakota sales tax license, and comparing multiple quotes before making a decision. Residents are also cautioned against paying in full before work is completed and should confirm that all suppliers have been paid to avoid property liens.
Officials further warn consumers not to be pressured into quick decisions and to never share personal or financial information with individuals claiming to represent repair businesses without proper verification.
State authorities encourage anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to report it promptly, helping prevent further scams during the busy storm recovery season.
