A Rapid City Central High School student was recognized Monday evening for his brave actions during an assault involving a city bus driver.
Jaylen Rood received a Certificate of Heroism from Mayor Jason Salamun and members of the Rapid City Council during their meeting, where officials commended him for stepping in during a dangerous situation aboard a Rapid Transit System bus.
According to the certificate, Rood showed “exceptional bravery, courage and quick thinking in the face of imminent danger” after witnessing a passenger assaulting the driver. City officials said he immediately intervened, acting without hesitation to protect the driver.
Rood reportedly rushed to assist, stopped the assault, and removed the individual from the bus. Officials noted that his actions directly contributed to the safety and well-being of the driver and demonstrated a high level of compassion and courage.
City leaders praised Rood as a positive example for the community, saying his actions represent the kind of selflessness and bravery worthy of recognition.
Rapid Transit Manager Megan Gould, along with several bus drivers and staff members, attended the ceremony. Community Development Director Vicki Fisher also joined city officials in honoring Rood.
Rood received a standing ovation from a packed council chamber as he accepted the award, joined by family members who were present to witness the recognition of his heroic actions.
