The Sturgis City Council met Thursday, to review results from the June 2 municipal election and address discrepancies in vote totals reported in several wards.
While City officials said the inconsistencies appear to be minor and are not expected to impact the outcome of any races they agreed that a recount and recanvass are necessary to ensure the accuracy of the results before certification.
Under a motion approved by the council, a recount will be conducted, and members will reconvene on Monday, to review the updated totals and move toward certifying the election.
In the meantime, the results remain unofficial pending completion of the process. State law requires that election canvassing be finalized within seven days of the election.
