The Central States Fair has identified longtime maintenance manager Paul “Pauly” Nebel as the victim of a Sunday morning shooting at the Rapid City fairgrounds that prompted a multi-agency manhunt.
Officials say Nebel was injured when 58-year-old John Troy Lee opened fire around 8:45 a.m. Nebel remains hospitalized, with social media reports indicating he is in a medically induced coma.
In a statement, fair officials described Nebel as a beloved team member and friend to many, asking the community for prayers and support. “Our focus is on supporting Paul and those who love him,” the organization said.
After the shooting, Lee fled in a pickup and was later tracked to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where he died in a shootout with law enforcement that also left an Oglala Sioux Tribe officer wounded.
Authorities say the investigation into both incidents remains ongoing.
