South Dakota officials have confirmed the season’s first West Nile virus–positive mosquito pools in Brown County and are urging residents to take precautions.
Health experts warn WNV can cause fever, headaches, rash, and body aches. Residents are advised to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, limit outdoor activity at dusk, and eliminate standing water.
Those over 60 and people with underlying health conditions face higher risk. The state has reported more than 2,950 cases and 58 deaths since 2002, with one human case already reported this year.
