City officials are reminding drivers that all truck loads must be covered when traveling through Rapid City’s Air Quality Control Zone to help reduce dust pollution.
City Environmental Planner Morgan Twombly said it is a violation of municipal code to haul materials that could create fugitive dust without a tarp, and the rule applies to all vehicles—no matter the size of the load.
The designated zone covers a 10-by-10 mile area surrounding Rapid City, excluding areas within Box Elder city limits.
Twombly emphasized that uncovered loads continue to impact local air quality and noted that contractors, in particular, are expected to follow the rule as part of their air quality permit requirements.
Violations can result in fines of up to $500 per day or up to 30 days in jail.
For more information, residents and contractors can contact the City’s Air Quality Office at 605-394-4120.
