A climber was injured Saturday morning after falling in a popular rock climbing area behind Sylvan Lake, prompting a multi-agency response from Custer County Search and Rescue.
Officials said the call came in around 10:50 a.m., with Life Flight automatically dispatched. Fellow climbers had already lowered the injured man to the ground by the time crews arrived, and he was stabilized using a vacuum mattress before being carried to an ambulance.
Due to low cloud cover, Life Flight could not land at the nearby site and instead met the ambulance at Monument Health Custer Hospital, where the patient was transferred for air transport. The extent of his injuries has not been released.
A second climber was evaluated for minor injuries at the scene.
