Pennington County State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel presented her proposed budget to the county commission Wednesday, requesting increased funding to cope with escalating caseloads, staffing shortages, the growing burden of digital evidence, and continued support for diversion programs.
Roetzel emphasized that her attorneys are managing more than twice the workload seen in other areas, and warned that the current pace is unsustainable. “We’re at the center of the criminal justice system,” she said, adding that without more staff and improved technology, her office can’t keep up with community demands.
Commissioners expressed both support and concern, particularly regarding the county’s limited revenue. Roetzel acknowledged the financial challenges but stressed the urgency of her request.
Her proposal will be reviewed as part of the county’s broader budget discussions later this summer.
