South Dakota public schools will soon receive a letter outlining state resources to help educators recognize and prevent human trafficking.
The state Board of Education Standards voted unanimously Monday to send the letter to school superintendents and curriculum directors, encouraging staff to complete available training.
Andrea Effling with the Department of Education said training will be offered online through the Division of Criminal Investigation, with versions for general educators and school counselors. Participants can earn continuing education credits.
The letter will also highlight mandatory reporter training from the Department of Social Services. Officials say increasing awareness is key to prevention, noting human trafficking remains a concern in the state.
