Lawmakers in Pierre got a glimpse of the future of emergency response this week, courtesy of a high-tech ambulance parked outside the Capitol. But instead of rushing to a call, the vehicle was showcasing Telemedicine in Motion—a cutting-edge program from the South Dakota Department of Health and Avel eCare.
Using live video, EMTs can now connect with emergency physicians while en route with patients, transforming care even in remote areas. Governor Larry Rhoden, who visited the demo, credited investments in rural broadband for making virtual doctor “ride-alongs” a reality.
The public and lawmakers tested the system firsthand. Rebecca VandeKieft of Avel eCare says it’s a game-changer—allowing ambulance crews to focus on treatment, not paperwork or phone calls.
The program currently serves 105 communities, reaching over 80% of South Dakota.
