The Rapid City Legal & Finance Committee voted 4-1 on Wednesday to support funding plans for a new multi-use sports complex on Seger Drive, near Rushmore Crossing. The project now heads to the full City Council for a final decision on Monday, July 7 at 6:30 p.m.
The proposed 22.78-acre facility will feature 8 basketball courts (convertible to 16 volleyball courts), an indoor turf area for sports like soccer and baseball, and a performance center with a sprinting track and batting cages. The land was donated by Pete Lien & Sons, Inc.
Funding includes a $5 million allocation from the city’s Vision Fund, boosted by unexpected sales tax surpluses. However, the plan has drawn criticism from Alderman Bill Evans, who argues the money should support broader community needs.
The committee also approved the creation of Business Improvement District 2, which would add a $2 nightly fee to hotel stays at properties with 55+ rooms—projected to raise $1.5 million annually for construction and maintenance.
Both proposals passed committee review but await final approval from the City Council.
