More than half of South Dakota continues to experience drought conditions, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor data released June 25, 2026.
Recent figures show roughly 53 percent of the state is in drought, with an additional 30 percent classified as abnormally dry. Severe to extreme drought conditions cover significant portions of the state, particularly in western and southern areas.
About 11 percent of South Dakota is experiencing extreme drought, while larger areas fall into severe and moderate categories. Ongoing precipitation deficits and above-normal temperatures have contributed to the widespread dry conditions, stressing soil moisture and affecting agriculture.
Officials say drought conditions remain a concern across much of the state, with impacts continuing for farmers, ranchers, and water supplies as the summer season progresses.
