The South Dakota Republican Party Convention got underway Thursday in Rapid City, bringing together hundreds of delegates, party leaders, and candidates for three days of meetings and political events.
Day one at The Monument focused on committee work, including rules, platform, and resolutions discussions, along with registration and an afternoon floor session. The opening day also featured social events and an evening program with speeches from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
The convention comes as Republicans prepare for upcoming elections, with delegates expected to shape party priorities and hear from candidates seeking support for statewide offices.
However, the first day was not without controversy, as some media outlets reported being denied access to certain speeches despite registering for credentials.
The convention continues through Saturday, when delegates are scheduled to hold additional floor sessions and select nominees for key constitutional offices.
