The South Dakota Department of Transportation and South Dakota Highway Patrol announced that U.S. Highway 14A in Spearfish Canyon was successfully cleared and reopened to traffic around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Crews worked through the weekend to stabilize the area and ensure the safety of motorists.
A rockslide in the Canyon sent large boulders tumbling onto U.S. Highway 14A early Saturday morning, prompting a full closure of the scenic roadway.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) announced the closure in a Facebook post, stating that the road would remain closed until crews could safely blast and remove the debris. The South Dakota Highway Patrol later confirmed around 7 p.m. Saturday that the highway was still impassable and the cliffside remained unstable.
Roadblocks were set up from just north of Long Valley Lane to just south of Victoria Lane.
Department of Transportation crews will be working to repair damage to the roadway and urge caution when traveling in the area.
