Residents of Highmore are cleaning up after a powerful storm brought some of the strongest wind gusts ever recorded in South Dakota, causing extensive damage across the community.
A wind gust of 131 mph was recorded Monday morning in Highmore. The storm damaged businesses, tore apart buildings, downed power lines and snapped wind turbines. Debris and damaged infrastructure left many roads impassable, with Highway 14 serving as the primary route in and out of town.
Gov. Larry Rhoden visited Highmore to assess the damage and praised residents for their determination during the recovery effort.
The governor said he was particularly surprised by the destruction of wind turbines, noting the significant cleanup effort that lies ahead.
Recovery efforts continued throughout the day as utility crews restored power and volunteers worked to clear debris and repair damaged homes
Officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage as cleanup operations move forward.
