A 21-year-old Sturgis man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to receiving child sexual abuse material, federal authorities announced.
Luke Basche was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler. In addition to the prison term, Basche was ordered to pay restitution and forfeit property connected to the offense.
According to court records, Basche used an internet-based chat application to search for and view child sexual abuse material on his cellphone.
The case was prosecuted as part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Childhood initiative, which targets the exploitation of children online.
The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Following sentencing, Basche was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence.
