Two motorcyclists were injured Sunday afternoon after laying down their bikes to avoid several turkeys near the intersection of Highway 44 and Placerville Road, according to the Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department.
Both riders were transported to a hospital for evaluation following the crash. The extent of their injuries was not immediately available.
Responders said the turkeys had left the area before emergency crews arrived.
The fire department noted that while drivers of enclosed, four-wheeled vehicles are often advised to maintain control rather than swerve to avoid animals, that guidance does not apply to motorcycles and other two-wheeled vehicles, where striking an animal can pose a serious danger.
No further details about the incident have been released.
