Significant traffic restrictions around Mount Rushmore National Memorial as security and safety measures will be implemented for the Freedom 250 fireworks celebration and President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit on July 3.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation will close portions of U.S. Highway 16A and S.D. Highway 244 beginning at 11 p.m. this evening through approximately 11 p.m. on July 3. The Highway 16A closure will extend from west of the Keystone Mall south to Grizzly Gulch Road, while Highway 244 will be closed from its junction with Highway 16A to the Wrinkled Rock Trailhead.
Officials say motorists will not be able to access Iron Mountain Road or Highway 244 from Keystone during the closure period. However, both routes will remain accessible from alternate directions.
Additional closures will affect the Breezy Point and Wrinkled Rock recreation areas, along with Forest Service Roads 442, 442.1A and Lafferty Gulch Road, as part of a coordinated traffic, safety and security plan.
Access to the July 3 event is limited to ticket holders selected through a public lottery. Mount Rushmore will reopen to the general public on July 4. Officials are encouraging travelers to check road conditions and closure information before heading into the Keystone area.
