A man accused of an armed carjacking in Rapid City was taken into custody Friday following a vehicle pursuit and hours-long standoff in eastern Pennington County.
Authorities say 27-year-old Lyric Hill allegedly stole a vehicle at gunpoint around 9:45 a.m. near West Florman Street and Central Boulevard in Rapid City. Later in the morning, a Pennington County Sheriff’s deputy located the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near Antelope Creek Road.
Hill allegedly fled, leading deputies on a pursuit eastbound on Highway 44. Spike strips successfully disabled the vehicle, but Hill exited the vehicle and fled on foot into a nearby field while armed with a handgun.
A large multi-agency law enforcement response secured the area and negotiated with the suspect before he was safely taken into custody, bringing the incident to a peaceful resolution.
Officials said Hill is a parolee who was already being sought on a parole detainer. According to the Sheriff’s Office, he is on parole for convictions including child abuse involving a victim under age 7, escape, aggravated eluding, and second-degree robbery.
Charges related to the alleged carjacking and pursuit are pending.
